The History Center of Thessaloniki was estabilished by the Municipal Council of the city in 1983 in order to collect, rescue, record, and preserve printed, written, and audio-visual material related to the history of the city of Thessaloniki and several surrounding areas.
Preserving the city’s historic legacy
The center aims at the promotion of historical research related to the city while it provides more information to anyone who is interested on learning more about the modern city and its historical past. Since 1995 it is housed in Ipodromiou St. near Navarino Square, in the center.
The name of the street reminds us of the ancient Hippodrome that was located at the exact same area, right next to the Galerian Palace.
Within the building there is a historic library with more than 3000 photographs, 4000 books, postcards, posters, historical maps and other precious documents.
The History Center also publishes a journal tittled Thessaloniki, with several interesting articles about the city and its past.
Many temporary exhibitions illustrating the historical continuity of the city and the wider area of Macedonia are being organised along with a number of conferences and lectures.
- A trully interesting destination for anyone who is interested on the city’s history.
